Past Highlights

A vast collection of postcards from a local Estate, There were many high points including a £1750.00 bid for an album containing 385 Cornish topographical cards, including ship wrecks, the 1911 Helston Knill Celebration and Flora Dance cards, this was one of a number of albums which attracted four figure bids and over £30,000.00 of postcards were sold.

The BBC “Flog It” team strolled into town, with items forwarded from their valuation day at the Maritime Museum at Falmouth, some 35 items were brought in making a number of programmes.  Leading the sale was a Rolex gent’s stainless steel Oyster perpetual Submariner wrist watch in a fairly poor state, valued by one of the “Flog It” team at £300.00 - £500.00, this went on to make a stunning £6200.00 to a telephone bidder from Germany. Also from ”Flog It” came a Chinese “cafe-au-lait” glaze spherical tea pot decorated with a garden scape reserve which sold for £900.00, against an estimate of £80.00- £120.00. Very apt coming from the Maritime Museum was a pond yacht. The Edwardian 60” racing pond yacht had a guide of £150.00 - £250.00, but with fair wind raced to a £750.00 finish.

We hold five Collectors Sales per year, with again many noticeable highs, a number of Royal Mint four and five coin proof sets came on the market and depending on age and rarity sold between £1200.00 to the top price of £1920.00 for a 2001 UK gold four coin proof sovereign collection.

The stamps are not to be out done, in June came a fascinating and valuable early GB collection in album, which is included a few pre stamps, as well as 3 Penny Blacks, 1840 Tupenny Blue aslo a range of Queen Victoria stamps, which sold for an impressive £2900.00.

A GB Queen Victoria £5 orange mint stamp, together with the original headed letter sent with the stamp and other paperwork to enhance the providence, proved a real must have for many collectors and sold way past expectations at £4,200.00.

The busiest area at The Auction Rooms, Lostwithiel, continues to be centred on the jewellery cabinets where most four figure bids are received on diamond jewellery. Top honours went to a 2.4ct quality diamond solitaire ring, which sold for £6200.00, with many rings attracting bids in the £1000.00 - £5000.00 range.  

A pair of Art Deco, white gold diamond earrings sold for an impressive £3000.00.

A Gent’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea Dweller Submariner wrist watch with black face and red lettering on a Rolex bracelet strap sold to one of six telephone bidders against ten bids left with the Auctioneer, selling   for a house record of £10,200.00.

Silver prices have remained steady all year, a 140oz canteen of rat tail silver cutlery, produced in Sheffield between 1929-31 for 12 place settings, together with a set of mother-of-pearl fish eater and dessert set all in an attractive fitted cabinet sold to an up country buyer at £2100.00, and for the classic older piece of silver a fine Georgian silver tankard with lidded domed top had many admirers, the 8” high tankard with assay mark for London 1760 went for £1080.00.

The eclectic mix of goods on offer saw a Yamaha Fender Jaguar electric guitar with gold body, sold for £1050.00, a “magic” coin operated table top amusement machine by Bryans, a vintage from the early 1900s sold for £1600.00.

The demand for Fred Yates works is as strong as ever and 3 of his works attracted 4 figure bids this year, the top an unusual landscape, “Overlooking the Bay” attracted a £2000.00 bid with other smaller examples of Sennen Cove and Fowey making £1300.00 and £1000.00 respectively.

The furniture buyers are much more choosey and quality is the key. A set of 8 painted Hepplewhite shield back carver chairs took top honours with a £1400.00 bid.
